You may recall that I had made a trip last November to Ramganga River for Mahseer fishing, with
disappointing results.

I made up my mind then and there to go to the Saryu River camp, set up by the same outfit, in a warmer month so as to be sure that the fish were biting and not in a dormant state.

The plan materialised this month and I have just returned after a week long trip. The results were very satisfying and I post pictures below for your viewing pleasure.

Technically, I used a 9ft6" surf rod mated to a Saltiga 4500H reel with a relatively fast retrieve
ratio of 5.7:1 loaded with 50lb J8 braided line. The rod is 3 piece, so easy to pack and travel with.

I had started with 60lb fluoro leader joined by an FG knot but this started unravelling after a few casts
and I had to then use a 40lb leader .... no further issues with the FG knot and it held good for the rest of the fishing.

The standout lure was a Rapala jointed plug J -11 in rainbow trout colour, it got me the largest fish. All
others were caught on a Lil Cleo 2/3 oz metal spoon in silver and gold colours (thanks for the tip, Bops!).

Moderators,

I am having great difficulty submitting my reports/replies ..... every time I hit the submit button the system reverts to Login, time after time.

I have to login and attempt to submit several times before acceptance.

What is the glitch?

Wow! Great report and pictures!
Thank you for sharing them Kingfish!

Never caught a mahseer yet, but some day.
That location looks beautiful and very peacefull. I could spend a few days there even if it wasn't for the fishing....

I am assuming that you are checking the remember me option when you log in and still getting this issue.
Could be some settings in your computer as I am not having this issue. I'll let Bopanna know about it though.

Hello Maruthu,

I wish that you may catch a Mahseer soon, it gives a thrilling fight that rivals a barramundi!

The issue with the submit button has only started recently, never had any problem before. Hope it may be resolved soon.

Even this post had to be cycled through login before it was accepted for submission.

The end of the day would see us with aching muscles due to climbing up steep tracks as well as walking on uneven, rocky ground along the river. No better medicine for it than to sit by the log fire with a drop of gold in hand!

Cheers!

Maruthu,

The glitch seems to have disappeared.... I read that with latest versions of iOS , one has to tap the ipad screen gently for certain functions to work . This was perhaps one of them.

Kingfish,
That's a decent Mahseer. I am glad you had a great trip. I have heard how powerful these fish are, but to bend an owner inline single hook is something. It should have been a large fish for sure.

Post subject:  Re: Saryu River Gold

Hello Binu,

How I wish I had put on some stronger hooks than the Owners!

I also had Gamakatsu hooks on other lures which seemed to be adequate, certainly for smaller Mahseer.
However, the guides said that straightened hooks are part and parcel for catching Mahseer.... fish that run to
40-50 lbs will not forgive any weakness in one's fishing gear.

I have forgotten the name of a hook recommend by the outfitters for large Mahseer .... will try to get a supply of these for the future.

Looking forward to your surf fishing reports.

Regards,
Kingfish

Hello Venkat,

Glad you liked the pictures.

Mahseer are a must for anglers to experience in their lifetime. Hope you can make it up North someday and catch one!

Kingfish, I suggest you prepare the text for any future reports on a notepad app. Then copy paste onto the forum and then add pictures. Just to rule out any logouts.

@IndianAngler

Thanks for the advice, Bops.

The problem was with my replies. As soon as I prepare a reply and wish to either preview it or submit it, the system immediately jumps to Log In.

This never happened before.

Okay. Unless the problem is reported by others on the board it is most likely on your Ipad or PC that changes need to be made.

Ok, will monitor it and see if further upgrades of the iPad operating system cure the issue.
