After two unsuccessful trips a GT bonanza was in store on the third trip out. A brief narration of how events unfolded on that day follows. We assembled at Robert's place around 4:00 AM and were soon joined by Prithivi our organizer and mentor. On the way to the harbor we were joined by Ravi and Sudheer. A quick tea and smoke break then straight to the harbor. We rigged up in the dark and boarded the boat in half light. It took approximately 20-25 minutes for the 10HP powered local fishing craft to take us to the designated spot and by then the first rays of the sun were beginning to light up the horizon. Prithivi made the first cast, an immediate hit followed by an immediate cut off. Surely a portent of things to come. We started hammering the watery door with halco poppers to summon our quarry from the deep and answer their primeval instinct.

I forget how many casts later but I suddenly noticed a larger than usual wake behind my lure and someone shouted out. Next thing I feel is an enormous force pulling in the oppsite direction to my retrieve. I hung on for a short while, then did what most sensible people would do in the given scenario and promptly handed the rod to Prithivi since it was his guidance that got me into that particular situation. However, he was having none of my shirking and the tackle was back in my hands.

What followed was a tug of war between an unseen monster who hadn't read the script and a hapless me. Shouts of encouragement and advice mingled with the noise of the diesel engine and my own thoughts of "Bloody Hell, what have I got myself into this time". With the rod butt jammed firmly into my mid section I tried to follow Prithivi's instructions to lift and pump the best I could all the while wishing some one would instruct the monster to display a sense of decency and cooperation. After 10 minutes or so I brought the GT along side the boat, Prithivi grabbed the leader with one hand, the tail with the other and landed my prize.

The GT weighed in at 17KGs and was hooked in the mouth and the rear trebles embedded in its throat, a little later Robert hooked and landed a 16KG GT after an epic battle the narration of which I leave to Robert. Last fish was landed by Prithivi who hardly broke a sweat and weighed in at 18KGs.

Three big GTs in about an hours fishing with two anglers landing their first GTs. In the words of Ravi " you can't ask for anything more"

I landed my second GT on 2nd Jan 2010 and it weighed in at 11 KGs, the story I leave for another post.

Hi Fred,

Given The Popping is happening around this wreck with no other structure in the vicinity. I suggest you hurry before the Gt become popper weary.

Mani (Thangamani) our fellow angler has a special recipe which made this fish a delicacy

Bobby, I immersed the fish cubes in a special marinade comprising of indian masalas, home made red wine, vinegar, soya sauce and ajinamoto for 24 hours. It's an accquired taste.

I am glad they were eaten (at least) and not tossed away. Ajinomoto AKA MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is not good stuff to put in your cooking guys.

The fish fed a lot of people, however, going forward our group has decided to practice 'catch and release' except when the fish is ripped open as in this case.

All "indian chinese" cooking contains ajinomoto, Bobby. Its used like soy sauce... add it to everything whether needed or not !!

Indian-Chinese maybe, but I do not the guys sent the GT's to in Indian-Chinese restraunt for preparation. If you go through the ingredients on food products, the good ones will say "MSG free" or "No MSG".

At one time they used lead utensils in Rome, as they used arsenic in makeup and tobacco inhalation was good for you (it still is for some people  ).

Agreed - And awareness is catching on - but there still is a long way to go.
My comment was not to justify the addition of ajinomoto but to highlight the fact that it is used (although wrongly) as a routine ingredient by many aspiring to prepare "chinese style" dishes.
