well guys ,i was feeling a bit restless for some time so decided to hit the blue waters. it was me and my partners ambition to hook a cobia or at least to spot it in the water or at least have a strike and a run from this fish,,so we began trolling early morning today and i first got a massive hook up with a grouper who i struggled to controll after some time of tug of war he broke the line,it could have been my personal best grouper,,but that was not to be,,but better things were in store for me  then i hooked a gt then aftersome i got a blubber lip snapper around 2 kg which i had to gave women inspector from coastal police who was after my fish basket,,,, :P then i hook into a fish which started runnning like bullet train ,, i played the fish for some time , as i brought it to the boat the boat guy saw the fin and started shouting shark shark  ,but i tolded him it is cobia because in my heart, i was waiting for this particular fish for a long time and i knew it that today i will catch cobia thank to almighty god for this day,it took my drag couple of times then my partner with a net landed the fish which was 6.5 kg cobia, i was overjoyed and i punched the air with cries of yahooooooooooooooooooo   and started dancing in the boat,,,,,my dream had come true after doing some research on this particular fish . then i got next , a massive strike and this fish gave me solid fight and i landed a 7.5 kg blubber lip snappper my personal best
cheers guys this is tiger,s first cobia or ling or modsoo in our beloved konkani
god bless
merwyn :D :D :D

Merwin, just a suggestion.. both the fish, the cobia and blubberlip would have looked much better if the picture was taken when they were landed, . 8)

I know when the fish are hitting or on the boat it becomes little difficult to take pictures..

Lot of people would also love to see how beautiful the fish looks.. :-)

Now what to say?? Merwyn, you are actually inspiring me these days with your consistant catches...
That blubberlip is a monster and cobia is beautiful... You really should have clicked some pics when those were landed..
Anyways the variety of fishes you are catching is absolutely wonderful... Keep them comming and keep making us happy with your catches and narrations....

Regards,

Dr. Prasad

Merwyn,

I have been doing a bit of reading on how to target cobia. So how do you target them? Can they be caught from the shore or is trolling the way to go? If you could also tell us the lure and tactic used, that would be great.

Or best, if you could take me along with you, I could also learn a few things from the great Tiger.

well, tony ,i know i one place where they target them with full mackerals and some time of the year they come close to shore in some konkan area which i cannot disclose to you now , and they are very fussy eaters ,, lures are not sucessfull all the time with them,, but i hear they go after colourfull lures and one take on lure ,and after that no other cobias will bite or strike again for some time they are fun to hook and play

Merwyn my friend..You rock!!! That is one huge barra   ..Though I am yet to catch my first barra, I am yet to experience the thrill of landing one. You make it look like a piece of cake. Looking at the size, i assume that must be around 8-10 kgs. Please correct me if I am wrong. Good to know that you have opened your account for 2012 with this huge barra. Looking forward to many more of your catches.

BTW, the fish market is almost out of stock these days due to the ongoing cold weather. The thought of having a piece of masala fried/rawa fried barra along with a couple of beers is a sight to relish! Enjoy your kill...:P

Viva goa! 8)

Cheers...

well guys the story about the above barra and the mj,,,i went fishing to my usual spot with my friend ,,that day good action at sunset,,,i landed this barra and one mj, lost 3 barras that day one huge fellow cut me on the rocks after playing him for a long time lost three lures that day and had about 3 misstrikes ,,i openned my barra account with this barra ,,this is my first barra this season,,,the reason for late start was because of goverment census duty for 2months for which the barra got rest,,now i am back on the scene ...
good luck
