The family decided on a quick 4 day reunion in the South Island of New Zealand and being the opportunistic angler, I packed a trout rod/reel and a heavier outfit for shore fishing for Kingfish ( similar to an amberjack, not the Spanish mackerel called kingfish in India).

Unfortunately, most of the rivers were closed to trout/ salmon fishing and only opened some weeks later in October. I did get a few casts in some sections that allowed angling but it was never going to yield any results in the short sessions....however, it felt good to be out with rod in hand.

I managed to leave early one morning for catching kingfish in the shallows, which is very tide dependent. I had reached late and there was only about an hour of fishing possible before the tide ran out.

The water looked good and there were several swirls where some large fish were feeding at the surface.
I tried some poppers and lures and was just getting the range when the better half came running from the car park, saying she had lost her phone.

To cut a long story short, we found it in the car after searching everywhere for over an hour but by then the tide had run out and no fishing was possible.

No worries, it has made me more determined to return to New Zealand shortly and make up for the lost opportunities!

I leave some pictures of the beautiful country to whet your appetite ... hope to see you there!

Fish or no fish sounds like a great trip Kingfish. Very beautiful snow capped mountains. I didn't know you got so much snow there.

Hello Binu,

Yes, it is hard to imagine that in winters one may laze on the beach in Sydney and then drive out to ski in the Snowy Mountains just a few hours away!

Hello Maruthu,

Yes, it would be nice to catch the fish after which I have got my "nom de plume" !

I have so far only managed to catch and then lose one kingfish in my life! It broke me off in the rocks just near me ..... a very hard fighter and notorious for break offs.

Regards,
Kingfish

Bobby,

Try for the kingfish, if you can, when in New Zealand.
