This year I took my family for the 3 day Salmon fishing trip to New York. Fishing was slow first day, and it took me a while to get the hang of difting salmon eggs. I was using an first generation 8 feet St.Croix Avid Surf rod, paired with Daiwa regal 2500 reel. I had the line spooled with 15lb mono, but changed it the second morning to 10lb Berkley big game mono, with a 12-15lb Seagaur fluoro leader. I was using size 2 Owner Saltwater hooks.
I had a Shimano Stradic 2500 and a Cabelas Inshore rod that my wife was fishing, as a backup setup.
With the lighter line, I was able to get more hits and better drifts, but I had to fight very carefully or lose the fish. Once hooked you have to follow the fish up/down river and fight carefully alerting other anglers that you have a fish on so you don't tangle with their line. I landed 7 fish and missed a few in hookups and couple to broken line.
We released most of the fish and kept 2.
Here are some pictures and all the fish I landed were King Salmon. I missed one Coho Salmon after a good fight and close to the net. One of the King Salmon I released would have been over 30lbs
The peak run hasn't started yet, and I may go again in a couple of weeks.
I hope you all like the pictures !!
