It was almost a year ago that we were invited by a friend to fish the Malaysian waters for Toman ( Giant snake head).

On the 1st of October me and my son Rahul eventually left to do just that. Well this fish is a new species for us and a lot of internet surfing went into our preparation for the trip. We had packed 4 rods , reels and an assortment of top water lures and diving plugs.

Since we fish a lot for Murrel we assumed that the Toman would be a very similar fish . Being top water addicts we were really looking forward to some serious top water sport.

However the fishing was very hard as the fish were very reluctant to hit the lures. The reason being the fish comes up to breath, and then dive. The cast has to be made at that precise moment with great accuracy and as much stealth as possible ( a difficult task!!) Since we were fishing a reservoir the banks drop down real fast and and fish dive down to any where from 10 to 30 meters or even more. This makes lure fishing rather a tall task and all the movement you impart to the lure fall on deaf ears.. The sure shot method is to toss a live cat fish which is like a homing device that dives right after the toman to the bottom.

We had a few friends with us who fished live bait and they had big numbers of fish caught. However us being lure fisher men we tried our butts off casting at every rise from sun rise to sunset and caught fewer fish but that one fish on lure was worth a thousand casts.

To see Toman hit top water lures is a sight to behold. The explosion can be heard from right across the lake. We lost a lot of fish to cut mono shock leaders. The tomans teeth are like razor blades and the bite pressure is like a pair of garden shears!!

Towards the end of the trip we were much more educated on Toman behavior and will surely go again to fish these magnificent fish on top water lures.

Every day we tried one or two cat fish bait and each accounted for a toman.

Pictures to follow …..

Jeen

You've got VIBGYOR Toman's. Man some pretty looking fish. Hows your son? Hope he is recovering faster.

Take care. Are you back in AUH?

Amazing colors. Beautiful fishes.

Jeen,

Some time I envey you but mostly it is admiration when I go through your post. You are not only a great angler from heart, you are also the best father one can ask. Your son are blessed. The only thing I can say is "Respect" to you and your angling ways.

Heartiest congratulations for landing some "Lookers".

Regards,

Ali. :-)

Was this a guided operation or can one hire a boat on the waters and strike off on one' own?

King fish,

We took a guided trip with jean Francois helias and got a raw deal, in terms of very poor organisation and a guide who wanted to fish for himself rather than put the guests on to fish. Will pm you some contacts where you can get a better deal and a committed guide.

Amir:- Yes that was a boga grip.

Jeen,

Thank you for the advice....I've had guides like that also !

I think one of the side benefits of this forum is the incidental information
That is passed between the forum members to help each other.

Some nice fish there Jeen beautiful fish! Fished for these snakehead before in northern thailand and not with him  used the locals. We did well and went 3 times in total for 5 days a time think the best fish was 15lbs. Found the best action came to surface lures, propeller baits were my fav.

My Thai friend tells me that now the fishin is very poor and not worth the effort Seems bangkok pet shops net the fry for peoples home aquariums :x
