Hey hallo my fellow anglers

As i newly moved to Bangladesh it was quite difficult to find a nice Pond i can just go fishing. So after i finally asked some people in my fathers village they send me to a pond 1 hr outside of Dhaka where they told me i would enjoy fishing.

Normally in Bangladeshi ponds (got also my own little pond) i commonly caught Rohu , Kalbasu , Mrigal , Big Head , Common carp , gras carp , Telapia and Catla

But after just 1 min the hook was in the water a fish bit on my Strawberry-milkbread-ant egg bait and i was quite suprised to see my catch.

Can anyone tell me what kind of fish that is ??
The villagers told me it is an introduced species and they put it in there because they will sell it for quite high price.

I had my doubts wether this is legal ?! and stopped fishing there ...

Please can someone enlighten me here :D

Hi mate,

Looks like a small Pacu, a species originally from South America. They are popular in the aquarium trade and hence have escaped in various countries, and been introduced into commercial fisheries in countries such as Thailand.

They are related to Pirahna but grow much larger and don't have the sharp teeth because their main food source is nuts and berries which fall from bankside vegetation.

All the best, Scott

.

hi mate!! This is an introduced species because it is not a natural habitat of this part of the world.
Here in West Bengal we call it
'Rupchand.'
but one thing!!! it has an array sharp teeth... which can be really dangerous if not taken care while holding.
enjoy fishing!!!

Pacu (Piaractus brachypomus) - Vegeterian Piranha from South America. Introduced species for cultivation. Very tasty :)
