As I heard from the guys at the Pune anglers meet, they are trying to find locations for the murrell breeding program... what should be the size of the water body for this ?
and would reservoirs count as a good breeding ground ? because I know one such place...
this reservoir retains water throughout the year and probably comes under the forest area...the proof of this is that I have seen small fish, water snakes, and lots of crabs in there, and migratory birds also visit this area...Its away from the main city...

what say guys ? :? [/b]

Hi Rakesh,

Can you PM me the location please? There is a lot more than just the location involved. Many places are restricted and angling/trespassing is not allowed.

Regards,
Humaid

Dunno man... Its a reservoir used for irrigation... probably comes under the forest area its 207 X 170 yards wide... depth don't know...
and I think the water level goes down a little in the summers...

hehehe no man this is near undri... If you want we can go down and have a look...I just know that murrels (or other snakeheads) used to climb up the wadas in my village towards the farms or fields to breed during the first heavy rains... so can they actually breed here if we released some ? and I still think this place comes under forest department as I have bought land nearby... :-)

Darryl is always busy. So come to the Hadapsar fish breeding centre & buy some fish fry's & release them in your pond. Hopefully, by next year we can go for some fishing. Beware of poachers !!!

Hi Col. !

Heard a lot about you on the forum !
Thanks a lot sir ! I'll check the hadapsar fish breeding centre... where exactly is it ? and would fry's be available in this season ?

and that is near a village area, no poachers I think...most of the people are farmers there and have no idea about that place...
It'll be a pleasure to fish with you ! :D

Beautiful Spot..

Just a word of caution. Every water body has a unique eco balance and introducing a predator like Murrel can easly destroy it. Do study the water and try to find out the resident species and in case, Murrel is one of them, do introduce it. There are lot of water bodies in Maharashtra, which are house to Mahseer and does not have any Murrel. I know of two such water bodies near Nashik which are but a short distance apart, one holds Murrel but no Mahseer and the other one has only Mahseer.
I have a suspension that introducing Murrel in a water body which is a home of Mahseer will not be a great idea.

Regards,

Ali.

Thanks ali bhai ! :D
this water body doesnt have any big fish just small garra and barbs maybe... there are lot of crabs though...and I think this one's not good for murrel as it does not have much water plants on the banks... and the only green you find in the reservoir is shewal/algae...
Which fish would be suitable for this ?

Ali Bhai,
I was not recommending releasing murrelet fry in the lake. You get only Rohu & Katla fry here at Hadapsar. the breeding centre is located on the main solapur highway close to the flyover.

Cavalier

Hi Raka,

Very nice spot for fishing! However, Ali has a very valid point. If there are no Mahseers in this water body, then of course you should introduce Murrel fingerlings there.

Murrel farming is done in South India and you can get the fingerlings from them. I shall send you the address soon. After you introduce Murrel fingerlings, they need to be fed with minced Chiken intestines, so that they grow fast.

Regards,

Arun
