Post subject:  CARP ON A FLY

hi guys, i just took up fly fishing for a change and managed to hook my first carps on fly. these were the black spot carp that take spinners and fly readily and run upto 1lb max. i tied a team of three flies with the woolly bugger , march brown and stone fly nymph. i caught three fish. lets see if i can hook a murrel with the streamers that i have.

thanks ravi :D . i am learning too. fly fishing is fun and very easy once you get the hang of it. the capture, on artificial fly, of a fish instilled with all the cunning that evolution bestows, is the ultimate angling challenge. where other methods like fishing with natural bait and lures is more effective, fly fishing offers an experience that will test your skill and patience to the limits.

@mayur- thanks for the tips. i have enrico's mackerel and gummy minnow that i am going to try for murrel plus i have ordered some frog type flies that they use for bass.

@ rakesh- thanks mate. take up fly fishing.. its a lot of fun..

thanks saiki and alibhai :D

thanks mario, the best bet with murrel would be a mepps spinner no 4 in gold , copper or silver. use that in open water or along the weed margins. the retrieve should be slow. pm me the location or if you are visiting
anywhere near ahmedabad.

thanks carlton, when are you coming here? please pm me if you are coming to ahmedabad. the murrels can be easily caught on streamers and frog imitating flies but it is real hard work casting long distances and my 5 wt rod is too light to cast large flies. the murrels can be easily seen cruising just below the surface.

The carnatic carp to also takes #2 spinners and gives a fight when fished with light trout tackle.

Nice catch Aamir.
What is your current fly rig setup? I would recommend using a WF5W line. You can go all the way up to #10 on your fly size with 3# tippet setup with a tapered leader. I have never fished for Murrel and I am not sure how good/bad they fight. But what I mentioned above is my go to rig for medium LM bass here. I am able to cast a fair distance with a 9' 4-piece 5wt rod. Hope this helps.

Cheers.....
