The so called Piranha is called Pacu to be specific. Very common in aquaculture now days, mainly in Bengal.

Looks a lot like a red bellied pirana to me but it could be a baby pacu. Were the teeth pointed or flat and what bait did it take ?

I have to disagree with the comment about the fighting abilities of pacu though. A 15lb black pacu is a serious opponent and will pull your string properly.

Ken .... you may be right ,it could give a good fight if it grows to 15lb but here in our local waters i have never seen pacu growing more than 4-6lb . my personal best is 2lb fish on rod and reel. recently i caught one another imported carp ( black carp) and its fighting abilities is better than any indian major carps( rohu, catla, mrigal), only second to mahseer.

Yep, sounds like a Pacu. I presume the bright colours fade as they get bigger because the ones I've caught (upto 18lb) were much more steel grey.
I have seen piranhas on sale in Indian aquatics shops though so it's only a matter of time before they get established - watch those toes.
