We have been fishing with lures but not a strike in the last 2 months…It was either windy or the sea was rough…On Thursday we bought dead baits (sardines) and went fishing…The evening started on a good note with a few cat fishes for both Saravanan and myself…And as the sun was going down the action began…I had a strike and the run was unstoppable…I was using a 8ft Chinese rod ( it was a rod that I had bought a long time back for Rs.500/- and had not used it for a long time, the cheapest rod that anybody can get ) and a TICA bait runner reel with a 40lb line…Fought the fish for nearly 15 minutes and landed it…It was sting ray and it weighed 8kgs…Saravanan had a strike just after he helped me land the fish…His fish was crazy…It ran, it fought and it stayed for nearly 40 minutes and when it close we could not lift the fish…The ray should have been 3 times the size I had caught…The line snapped and we lost the fish…
On Friday we decided to make it again… I was using the same tackle that I had used the previous day… Vivek and Abid joined us…In a few minutes all of them were catching catfishes, trevallies and breams… I went on the other side of the pier and dropped the dead bait…In a few minutes a sting ray took the bait…Fought the fish for nearly 40 minutes , walked the pier a couple of times and landed it close to the shore…It was a fight to remember…The fish weighed 11.5kgs…

excellent catches calvin... we have a place just like this in kochi, but the bottom is really rocky and most of my time i am retying my rig ( probably due to my lack of experience ) , what was the rig that you had used for these catches.

Hi calvin,

Lovely Stingrays. We too have been regularly catching stingrays & Guitar fish ( Shovelnose) on the western coast. However, be careful while handling them. The tail ( with a lethal barb) of the Ray you are holding is very close to you, can cause a very painful injury.

Regards
Cavalier

Congratulations Calvin :-) nice Sting ray you caught there !

I too had more than my share of fun with the sting rays, one gaint ray broke my rod while another leopard sting ray gave me a superb fight which is still fresh in my memory :D

Congratulations Calvin! Many anglers swear they give a good test to skills and tackle! Glad to see your landing them.

thanks everybody…

@angling4fun...its the braid to the leader using a fg knot/ double uni knot….the leader is tied to the hook with a snell knot…in the middle of the leader we crimp lead so that the bait sinks…keeping it simple allows us to feel the bite and also avoids the tackle getting caught in the rocks especially when we fight the fish…

@binu-we didn’t take the gaff on the 1st day…the fish was heavy and it was slipping out of my hands…we dismantled the rod and tied a large hook to the bottom half of the rod and used it as gaff…

@cavalier…we either tie the sting to the tail using a loop knot with braid or tape the sting or break it with pliers…

@ ravip58…it was on the pier next to the sunken ship… it’s been raining sting rays…shyam has landed 2 big ones…saravanan lost a couple of monsters…and the local fishermen have been landing many on hand lines…

@lionheart…that’s a massive one and looks great…superb…what was the bait???its always a fight to remember…

@merwyntiger...I had a strike on monday and in a few seconds the entire line of almost 250 odd mts of 55 lb line from my fin-nor reel was spooled off…the fish didn’t stop and we could see the line disappear from the spool…( will try uploading the amazing video )…i had no options but to tighten the drag… and the line snapped at the knot of the hook…once the line was spooled in we tried testing the drag…believe you me we could not pull out an inch of line from the tip of the rod…God only knows what the giant was…caught another small sting ray weighing 3.3kgs…
