Recently we, a group of friends went to west coast for some fishing action.
The trip was good and we overall landed 3 MJs ( 2 for my friend and 1 for myself). We saw few Barracudas leaping out of the water as well, but no luck. Though there were more MJs we refrained from catching them as we reached our initial set limit of 3.

Here are the pics..

Congrats on the catch Venkat!

Thumbs up, for leaving the fish biting after your set limit.

That barracuda is coming soon.....
Let's do a small trip sometime before the monsoon hit our shores....

Cheers! Maruthu

Hello Venkat.

Good to see your trip report and the nice pictures ..... as Maruthu said, your unselfishness is to be commended.

A little bit of information on the equipment and lures used would be helpful to other rock anglers.

Still worried about the gentleman fishing on those rocks without shoes, though!

Kind regards,
Kingfish

@Kingfish: Thanks for your concern. I too was barefooted. I have not yet tried krokers, but I feel very comfortable barefooted on the slimy rocks.

I do not believe in releasing an injured fish. I fish mostly around rocky structures and almost all the time the fish would have got badly injured while landing.
So I quit fishing after a limit unless for any compelling reason.

The rod and reel I ued were my initial setup. It is the Shimano 8 feet FX rod and 6000 size Shimano hyperloop reel. The reel is loaded with 20 pound mono.
My friend's setup is Abu Garcia Tournament 8 feet rod and Diawa reel with 30 pound mono.

The lures used were predominantly Halco LaserPro. I mostly use Halco lures. The reason being, they are the cheapest quality lures I can buy and they have worked in every situation.

Hope this helps...

Regards,
H.Venkatesan.

Hey Venky,

looks like you guys had a good trip! And it's very refreshing to hear you guys have a catch limit and fish so responsibly! I wish everyone would take note of that!!

And interesting you like to fish barefooted! I think on those smooth rocks it is the best way (maybe not for everyone). I once nearly had a very nasty incident while wearing shoes while on similar rocks.

I was crossing a large smooth rock which sloped down at an angle of around 45 degrees and as I moved my feet lost purchase and I started slipping down towards the bottom with no way of halting the movement.

At the foot of the rock, where it met the next huge boulder was a 14 inch wide gap running horizontal for around three metres. If my legs entered the gap I think i would have become completely stuck (for the hole between the rocks looked ver deep) and considering I was alone the consequences could have been very severe.

Luckily while I slid down the rock time slowed enough for me to see the impeding disaster and take action by placing a foot above the gap just before I slid into the dark hole.

But in the process I had to slam my rod down and so destroyed the tip ring. It was a very close call and had I been barefoot the whole incident could have been avoided. But also I should have probably chosen a safer route to reach my chosen spot!!

All the best, Tight lines, Scott

Yes Scott, we had a good trip. Thank God, that was a very narrow escape.
For me also time has slowed down twice and that too were a very narrow escape, but not related to rock hopping.
