I have always dreamed of a Saragosa and finally few weeks back the dream came true and I got my Saragosa SW 8000 reel.
After lot of confusion between 6000 and 8000 size I decided to go with 8000 size reel. The main source of confusion is the Shimano website where the specifications are wrong.
The reel is a little bigger and heavier than I expected. The Shimano website says 22 oz as weight but in the box it is mentioned as 24.3 oz.
I am happy with the reel and it feels solid and silky smooth.

Here is the reel and I paired it with Suffix 832 30lb. This is the first time I tried Suffix 832 and I am impressed.

It is a couple of years since I actively did fishing in my native. So to test the setup me and my friend Ajith planned a trip to our native (Kanyakumari).
Since I have not used the rod for long time the guides got rusted because of humidity, low maintenance and bad quality. As I was rigging the tip and few guides got broken.
Fortunately my friend had an extra rod and that saved my day. Did a few test cast and amazed by the difference between new 30lb and my old 50lb braid.

After the test cast I changed position and in the second or third cast I got a massive hit and the familiar pull, but the pull was stronger.
We saw a huge splash of water 100 yrds away for a couple of times. This is the first time I have seen a GT leaping out of water during the fight.
After a brutal fight we landed this GT.

Venkat,

That is a good looking reel and will serve you well over the years.

Very nice GT, presumably caught on a popper? What would it weigh?

Regards,
Kingfish

I caught it on Laser Pro, one of my trusted lures. It would weigh between 18 - 20 kilograms.

Very nice and solid GT !! That's a nice start with the new reel.
What kind of leader were you using?

Binu

Thanks Binu. I was using 12 feet of 50lb mono connected to 30lb braid mainline using FG knot.

Congrats Venkat!

That is one hell of a GT from the shore.
Can't beat fish caught with feet in land!

@Dhruba: I am not using any specific leader line. I am using the normal 50lb Berkley Triline as the leader.

Great Catch Venkat!!!

I had a few questions, when do you fish from the beach? Any specific tide or time of the day?
Do you cast only when there is Action visible? Do you cast straight out to the sea or some structure that you are aware of?

And the beach looks quite calm in the picture. Will it work when the beach has waves till quite some distance?

Regards,
Humaid

Fantastic catch....congrats on the new reel. Ive been using the 832 braid for a few years now and it casts really great. However it is not very good when rocks are concerned. Fireline seems to be better in those situations.

I will try to answer to your questions in the best possible way, but actually it is a little complicated.

1) I mostly do fishing in the evening, because I go to bed late and sometimes lazy in the morning. I have caught many big GT in the morning as well.
But majority of the big strikes were in the evening.
2) I don't rely on tides in our native place. The reason being tides have very less effect in our place. very rarely there will be a 2 feet rise, otherwise it is very negligible difference to notice.
The other reason being I am yet to get an accurate tide chart for my place.
3) Generally after reaching the spot I will observe the place for quite sometime before casting. A few cast in the place will tell whether there is fish or not.
There are many times I have got strike on first cast. If after few casts if there is no bite, we use to sit and chat keeping any eye on the surface.
Once I perceive an action, I will cast. On most instances we have caught fishes like this. More than couple of times we have targeted fish and caught them.
4) I Predominantly fish from rocky structures. I am not doing surf fishing as much as love to do. If I am to do surf fishing I would try near an estuary mouth,
near to a rip/hole. I would look for bait fish concentrations as well.
5) Surf fishing in flat beaches with no turf or structures is challenging. I know the terrain I fish very well.

I have bought Saragosa mainly for surf fishing. I have now a collection of lures mainly for surf fishing. Once I get
a proper rod by the year end, I will do more of surf fishing as I like to do.

The loss of few good sized GTs because of braid touching the rock has put off me using braid for sometime. After mastering FG knot the problem is solved.
Also I am better now in fighting the fish around the rocks.

Hi Venkat,

Thanks for nice fish in hands after a long time.

Hope the momentum is carried on.

Did you have any structures around where you were fishing or where you having bunkers or trough in the area?

Again, thanks to re ignite our spirit recently.

Ezek

This place has hidden rock beds and a deep rip.

Venky, Were you using LaserPro 160 or 190? Seems you threw the lure pretty beyond the gutter??

Thanks Jeen.

@Ezekial: The lure was 160 size. The 30lb braid helped in getting distance. I wish I should have purchased 20lb instead.

20lb braid for GT on an open beach

LaserPro 160 is an awesome lure for jetties too.

These days I prefer to fish light. 20lb braid is more than enough to fight these fishes.
