Long back, I used to fish that beach religiously.
Things have changed a lot since then including the jetties that were built in the recent past.

You can go there on the south side of the river mouth without any issues.
The north side of the beach to the river mouth might have some access issues.

Carry some poppers with ya!
Please share the report when you get back.

Good luck!

Maruthu

Hi friends,

Had been to Kovlam beach chennai last weekend.
Tried using poppers from beach but it was too windy . So I just stopped and used sardines with paternoster rig. Managed to catch one catfish.
Picture is attached. There were many solid runs but I could not convert them. I believe they were some other species(not catfish) 'the runs were too fast .

Over all it was nice and short trip. My first saltwater catch :)

Congrats on catching your first saltwater fish!!
What happened with the other fishes, did they broke the line or did not hook up.

Hi Venkatesan,Maruthu

Thanks for your words and suggestions in past.

@Venkatesan :- I had put little tight drag. The pull was so fast and rod bend. As soon as I got hold of rod and tried reeling in the line snapped.
In fact I could not understand anything :)

other 2- 3 times there were small runs but could never hook the fish.

Glad you had fun, and congratulations on the first SW catch!

If you are using bait, try to hold the rod in your hands. Setting it down in sand spike is a good idea when fishing multiple rods. But if you are fishing one rod, its better to hold it, so you can feel the bites better and set the hook fast. Also set the drag before at a moderate level that you feel comfortable, and leave it as it is during the fight.
