Hello Forum,

Hello fello anglers! few pics of my catch from my first ever trawling session in the backwaters of goa! the biggest MJ i ever caught and the first one !

A Shimano Saragosa 8000F on Daiwa Boat212. Inaugurated the rod with a BANG! from the 2.2 kilo MJ. Lure was a borrowed shallow diver, pearl white!

Cheers

Thank you for watching my videos on YouTube!
Landing fish from the shore is a very nice feeling. I'll give Mapusa river a try when I get the chance.

Maruthu

PS: GoPro batteries die in about an hour and a half of use which is annoying and I wasn't able to capture a lot of action.
I just ordered a 3 more batteries and a couple of dual battery charger for my GoPro, so stay tuned for more from my upcoming trips :-)

Maruthu,

Atleast you capture something on your gopro! Whenever i strap my gopro, i land nothing!!! If you have the gopro5 or 6, voice commands work best, so your not continuously recording footage. Usually 1080p or even 720p works best giving more battery usage. I got the Silver Edition Hero4, best thing I could ever get gifted!

Cheers!

I have a GoPro Hero 4 Silver edition as well, that I received as a gift from my sister.

I have set the video quality to 1080 pixels at 60 fps and that gives me an hour and a half or so. I do not record continuously. However I start recording before casting to make sure I get the strike on the footage. Let's see how it goes when I get my extra batteries (official GoPro batteries). Even at 1.5 hours each battery, I should get about 6 hours of recording time with 4 batteries. That being said, I'll have to buy a few more of those 32 GB class 10 SD cards now and hope to catch a fish or two. lol

Maruthu,
You can even shoot at 24fps(Might score you half an hour more of battery life). But 60FPS gives you an advantage of slow mo! Or just hook a power bank ! Good Luck on your next cast !

@HookLineSinker

For barras, you will have to go deep. Try lures capable of 10-15 foot depths.

You are new to the forum.

The Moderators frown upon dead fish being displayed in photographs and it would be advisable if you could take pictures of fish freshly caught, in the boat or on shore.

The other thing we Members try to promote is "catch and release", so that adequate stock is available for future anglers.By all means, take some fish home.

Best wishes,

Kingfish

Hi Kingfish, any specific reason to try those depths for barra? I have seen them taking lures just below the surface.
But in another instance I have got two strikes consecutively when I really cranked the lure, that's why I am asking.

I am assuming that it might be a trawling thing.

That being said I have no clue on catching barras though I've caught a couple of them here and there.
If you are free, we can target them during the weekend of Holi and do a little bit of night fishing as well :-)

Maruthu is right, it is a trolling thing.

I have been on the river that @ HookLineSinker fishes and all the barras I caught were down deep.
Perhaps it was because we were there during the daytime.

Venkat, barra will hit near the surface when feeding actively at dawn and dusk but will go deep as
the day progresses. Not a hard and fast rule but if one is not catching them near the surface then it is worth a try to go deeper.

It IS possible to catch them in shallow water but for that you have to have a high tide and lots of mangrove trees. The Barra will then tend to hide in the tree roots and ambush passing fish. One then casts lures very accurately into the roots to provoke the barra into striking. This is a specialised form of sight fishing done in Australia from boats and I have done it successfully several times.

Regards,
Kingfish

This is what I meant about shallow water fishing. High tide, mangrove roots and barra!

Kingfish,

I usually don't get everything home for the table that I catch, I do release them as well. I'm well aware of the 'catch and release' funda as well!!(every angler should know this). Wouldn't make sense catching every fish and taking it away from the sea/rivers! So when you hit the rivers next time, sure you'd find fish

Unfortunately I fish very light and rarely take cameras with me, and a basic phone with no camera works well on me while fishing.

Thanks for the tip tho! Much Appreciated!

Maruthu,

Im guessing most of the barras are caught @ night or after sunset here in India.Or theyr more active when its dark?

I am sorry for not giving specifics but am sworn to secrecy by someone whose livelihood would be affected. Hope you understand.

Have you tried fishing the ocean side for Barramundi by boat? People have caught some good sized barra within sight of the shoreline in Goa.

Just a personal observation.
1. Barra are active around the Full Moon.
2. Night is a good time to target Barra.
3. Would be ideal is the tide turns at Dawn or Dusk.

Kingfish,

I didn ask for the exact spot, i wouldnt want to know that as well. For some fishing is a sport, and for some its their daily bread, we as fishermen should always respect that!

Im all exicited to shore fish south of goa when I get the time. Theres no more boat fishing for me, only land based now! Had only one boat ride and it was amazing.

Cheers,

HLS

Just to give you some inspiration, the above Barra was caught in Goa at Sunrise.
Also I have seen some record Barra being landed way inshore in the Goan Rivers.

All the beat with your Quest for Barra.

Thanks Kingfish.

Landing this Barra was a bit of a gamble. We forgot the rod with the heavier line at home and realized this after we reached the spot.
Instead of turning back, we though of giving a tri with what ever we had.

Daiwa Catfish Phantom Rod equipped with a daiwa reel that came with another combo (Graphite body and spool).
Daiwa Triforce 14lb mono.
2feet local mono line leader.

First it hit on a Cassan Barramagic lure in Golden color and spit the lure.
Changed the lure to a Halco Laser Pro in Fire tiger color and Bang!!

It gave a decent fight and was landed in 5mins. Was lucky that it didn't turn around the rocks else would have been short work of the mono.

Regards,
Humaid

Nice work on the light outfit. Just goes to show it can be done if the Angler is skilled and keeps his nerves.
